چکیده

It has long been known [1] that, when comparing subjects of the same age and height, African ancestry is associated with 12–20% smaller forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) than European ancestry. Both smaller and larger differences have been reported in studies of other ethnic groups. This has led to numerous efforts to explain the underlying reason for these ethnic differences. In this issue of the European Respiratory Journal, MENEZES et al. [2] present the results of a detailed and carefully conducted study that significantly advances our understanding. Because of the complexity of the problem and the large number of relevant publications, the references below are inevitably selective.

Cancer/Testis genes in relation to sperm biology and function

Cancer testis antigens (CTAs), a large family of tumor-associated and immunogenic antigens expressed in human tumors of various histological origins, are highly restricted to the testis and trophoblast. CTAs have been identified as potent targets for tumor-specific immunotherapeutic advances and have immensely lead to the development of different clinical trials of CTA-based vaccine therapy bec...

Investigation of the Relationship between Genetic Polymorphisms in GSTM1 and GSTT1 Genes and Susceptibility to Lung Functional Abnormalities in Workers Exposed to Air Pollutants at Isfahan Steel Plant

Introduction: Gaseous air pollutants can cause oxidative stress, which can lead to lung damage by inducing inflammation. Polymorphisms in the glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene are involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including lung disease. Two glutathione S-transferase Mu 1 (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) genes belong to this family, in which deletions occur ...

The socioeconomic status of subjects: a prominent feature contributing to the phenotypical approach to COPD.

Although the role of socioeconomic status in COPD has been poorly investigated when studying the determinants of respiratory health in ‘real life’, lower education levels and economic status have been presumed to lead to a higher probability of suffering from this disease [3–5] . Actually, these two conditions tend to work as main determinants of patients’ future because they usually lead to po...
